Dimension-Polyant SXI is a high-performance cruising laminate engineered for sailors who want more than Dacron can offer, but still demand long-term durability and easy handling. Built with Ultra-PE (Dyneema) in the primary load paths and protected by woven taffeta skins on both sides, SXI provides exceptional shape retention, resistance to stretch, and rugged construction ideal for serious cruising.
The Dyneema fibers allow SXI to handle significantly higher loads than polyester-based laminates, making it particularly suitable for larger, heavier cruising boats. Triradial panel construction further enhances sail efficiency by aligning the strongest fibers along the sail’s natural load paths. The result is a cloth that remains smooth, responsive, and stable across a wide wind range.
Who Should Use SXI
SXI is an excellent choice for mid- to large-sized cruising boats that prioritize both performance and reliability. It’s well suited for sailors who are upgrading from Dacron and want better pointing, reduced heel, and more precise trim—without moving into fully custom composite membranes.
We recommend SXI for coastal cruisers, extended overnight passages, and liveaboards who want high load capacity and consistent shape, especially in mainsails and headsails that see heavy use. Its construction offers a level of resilience and strength that outperforms most cruising laminates, with the kind of handling sailors expect from a sail built for the real world.
SXI’s Limitations
While SXI offers excellent performance and longevity for a cruising laminate, it doesn’t match the stretch resistance or weight savings of high-end racing membranes or custom composites. Sailors focused on maximizing light-air performance or fine-tuned upwind speed may benefit from a more advanced material with higher modulus fibers.
That said, SXI offers a meaningful middle ground—delivering much of the strength and stability of performance cloths while maintaining the durability and practicality required for serious cruising. For most offshore and coastal applications, it’s a tough, reliable choice with more than enough power to handle demanding conditions.
