Not Your Daddy’s Daisy Staysail

We have upgraded mainsails and headsails, added Code Zeros, and created more types of spinnakers than you could shake a stick at, but one sail still seems stuck in the past for most sailors: the light air windseeker. Whether you call it a drifter, a windseeker, or a daisy staysail, this light air sail is generally an afterthought. It sits in the bilge and only gets hoisted as a last resort. We decided it was time to bring this sail into the current century and fully modernize it.

First, a quick refresher on what this sail actually is. Called by many names, a windseeker or drifter is the sail you put up when the speedometer is showing goose eggs and the windex has turned into a merry go round for the birds. These sails were traditionally made out of very light spinnaker nylon so they could fly in the faintest breeze. They were small to keep the weight down, stretchy, and had almost no defined shape. As soon as the breeze increased, they became inefficient and we rushed to get them down.

It was time for an upgrade in both material and design. Starting with design, we took inspiration from other sails and added battens. Depending on the boat size, the sail carries three to five full length battens, each relatively thin. The sail is sized close to a full sized jib but with a touch of positive roach in the leech. As soon as light pressure is applied to the sheet and leech tension builds, the battens push forward and pop just like a fully battened mainsail. This allows the sail to set in zero breeze, achieving its designed shape without any help from the wind. Every ounce of energy from the breeze goes into pushing the boat forward rather than simply lifting the sail into flying position.

The addition of battens also allows a significant adjustment to sizing. Because the battens set the shape and we no longer need to chase absolute minimum weight, the modern windseeker is sized closer to a full size jib with a 100 percent LP and a bit of roach. It is significantly larger than the daisy staysails of old, and no one will complain about extra horsepower in light air.

We also updated the cloth, moving away from stretchy nylon to very light Aramid or Carbon laminates, either in triradial form or as a custom membrane like our EM2 E Tech. These lightweight materials are dramatically lower stretch, allowing the sail to hold its shape deeper into the wind range.

Combined with the increased size, the improved stability allows the drifter to remain effective further up the range without requiring an immediate sail change or risking damage. For most boats, the top end of the effective range is around 7 knots of wind, with structural limits over 10 knots. This significantly reduces the need to take the sail down at the first sign of pressure and minimizes unnecessary sail changes. Light air sailing often comes with poor vertical mixing, which shows up as unstable wind speed and direction. Constantly changing sails slows the boat and wears out the crew.

So now that we have a sail that flies in less breeze, works better across the entire range, and handles a much wider set of conditions, what do we actually gain? We gain the ability to get out of the hole faster and reach the next puff before the boat next to us. Distance races are rarely won in breeze; they are won by the boats that avoid holes and escape them the quickest. Think of the modern windseeker as a get out of jail free card.

These sails also serve as excellent light air staysails. Many spinnaker staysails lack battens and close off the leech in very light conditions. As the breeze builds, it is common to go directly from the drifter to a spinnaker if the angle is right. Using the windseeker as a staysail eliminates an extra sail change and provides a meaningful speed boost in marginal staysail conditions around 6 or 7 knots. And because the materials are strong, there is no need to switch it out for a different staysail unless you expect frequent gybing.

The often overlooked windseeker is a secret weapon in any offshore inventory. By creating a sail that flies in less breeze, builds speed faster, and works across a wider range, you can escape holes sooner, reach the next puff earlier, and sail away from the competition. It gives your navigator a get out of jail free card and a real advantage over the rest of the fleet.

Summary

The modern windseeker or drifter is no longer the small, stretchy, last resort sail buried in the bilges. By adding battens, increasing the size, and switching to low stretch laminates like Aramid and Carbon, the new generation windseeker sets instantly, delivers real power in almost no breeze, and stays effective well into the mid single digits. It reduces costly sail changes, helps the boat accelerate out of holes, and doubles as a light air staysail. For distance racing and offshore programs, it is one of the highest value additions to the sail inventory.
