Fibercon PolyKote – Contender Sailcloth – Racing Cloth

Fibercon PolyKote is a high-performance Dacron from Contender Sailcloth, designed specifically for one-design and club racing classes that require woven polyester sails. Built on the same base yarns as Fibercon Polypreg, PolyKote takes things a step further with a firmer finish and stiffer hand, offering maximum shape retention and minimal stretch for boats where rules prohibit laminates or composites.

PolyKote is engineered to deliver consistent sail shape through repeated uses and aggressive trimming. Its hard finish, tight weave, and heat-set resin system make it one of the most dimensionally stable woven polyesters available. These properties make it a go-to choice for class-legal sails in fleets like the J/22, Lightning, Tartan 10, and J/105—boats that demand precise sail shape and repeatable performance in Dacron-restricted racing.

Who Should Use Fibercon PolyKote

  • One-design racers in classes that require Dacron sails
  • Sailmakers building sails for strict class rules or traditional fleets
  • Club racers looking for the stiffest, most stable Dacron available
  • Boats like the J/22, Lightning, T-10, and J/105 where class rules require woven polyester
  • Sailors who want a crisp-feeling sail that holds its designed shape season after season

This cloth is built for racing. Its stiffness supports aggressive trimming and repeated hoists without sacrificing shape, which is critical in classes where every knot counts and sail life must be maximized under rule constraints.

Fibercon PolyKote’s Limitations

While Fibercon PolyKote delivers outstanding performance for a woven Dacron, it comes with a few trade-offs. The firm finish that provides its stiffness also makes it harder to handle—especially when flaking, folding, or storing the sail. To preserve shape and minimize damage, sails made from PolyKote should be rolled rather than folded whenever possible.

PolyKote is also not the best fit for cruising or mixed-use programs. Its rigid feel and focus on performance make it less forgiving in casual sailing environments. Sailors looking for comfort, easier handling, or extended cruising durability may prefer softer-finished options like Fibercon AP or Polypreg.

For racers in Dacron-restricted fleets, though, PolyKote delivers maximum performance from a classic material.
