EVO 04 and EVO 06 are custom-engineered Code Zero laminates developed in collaboration with Dimension-Polyant, based on their proven ODL upwind laminate. Originally designed for high-performance racing headsails, this cloth has been adapted specifically for Code Zero applications, with a lighter skin and a fiber layout optimized for reaching angles and furling performance. EVO uses Technora yarns for significantly lower stretch and better long-term shape retention compared to polyester-based laminates. Like PXB, it includes a dedicated fill fiber to control distortion during furling—but EVO is lighter, stronger, and holds its shape more effectively at tight reaching angles. The result is a clean-furling, high-efficiency material that extends the usable range of a cruising Code Zero—especially in light air and when sailing closer to the wind.
Who Should Use EVO 04 / 06 for a Code Zero?
EVO is a great fit for performance-oriented cruisers and club racers who want more from their Code Zero—more range, more control, and better light-air ability. It’s especially well-suited for boats from 30 to 60 feet looking to carry a Code Zero across a wider range of conditions, particularly at tighter reaching angles where shape retention is key. EVO 04 and 06 offer different weight options to match boat size and load. Compared to midrange options like PXB, EVO delivers a noticeable improvement in stability, light-air performance, and overall weight, while still maintaining manageable furling and handling characteristics.
What Are the Limitations of EVO 04 / 06?
While EVO delivers much lower stretch than polyester laminates, it still doesn’t offer the full aerodynamic refinement or depth stability of a custom membrane or structured luff sail. It also sits at a higher price point than woven or hybrid options, so it may not make sense for every cruising program—especially if the sail will only see occasional use. That said, for cruisers and club racers who want real performance gains and a wider wind range, EVO provides a near-membrane experience with the simplicity and reliability of a laminate.
