Contender CDX Pro is a triradial cruising laminate designed for sailors who want more performance than traditional Dacron can offer—without sacrificing durability or jumping to exotic materials. Built from a polyester laminate core with woven taffeta skins on both sides, CDX Pro offers excellent structure and resilience, making it a great all-around choice for active cruisers.
The triradial panel layout allows for better alignment of fibers along the sail’s primary load paths, significantly improving shape retention and reducing distortion over time. The result is a smoother, flatter sail that performs more efficiently in a wider range of wind conditions, while still being easy to handle, flake, and maintain.
Who Should Use Contender CDX Pro
CDX Pro is an ideal material for inshore and coastal cruisers who want a meaningful step up in performance over crosscut Dacron, but aren’t ready to commit to high-cost composites. It’s particularly well suited for boats in the 25–60 foot range and works well in both mainsails and headsails.
The double taffeta skins make CDX Pro highly resistant to chafe, UV degradation, and handling wear, making it a smart option for boats that see regular use but still want a sail that’s built to last. If you’re looking to get better pointing ability, flatter sailing, and more control from your cruising sails—CDX Pro delivers.
Contender CDX Pro’s Limitations
While CDX Pro outperforms Dacron in terms of shape holding and load alignment, it is still built from polyester and does not offer the ultra-low stretch or extended lifespan of carbon or hybrid-fiber membranes. Sailors pushing the limits of performance—especially offshore or in heavier air—may want to consider moving up to a composite sail with higher-modulus fibers.
That said, for coastal cruisers who want better sailing characteristics without compromising on ease of handling or price, CDX Pro remains one of the best laminate options available.
