What the Heck is 180 Sails?

By: Andy Camarda

You may have noticed that our branding and website have slowly shifted to 180 Sails. Don’t worry—Evolution Sails isn’t going anywhere. Instead, we’re evolving into something bigger: a brand that fully reflects our identity and mission.

When I started this company, I didn’t have a grand plan—just a desire to build great sails and an excuse to spend more time on the water while still calling it work. But as we’ve grown, I’ve taken a step back to ask: What do we really want to accomplish?

For me, sailing has never just been a business—it’s been a way of life. And as the industry moves toward corporate mergers and consolidation, we’re doubling down on what makes sailing special: independent craftsmanship, expert sailmaking, and ensuring sailing remains accessible and thriving for future generations.

What is 180 Sails?

180 Sails is about growing and supporting the sport of sailing. It’s about making sure that the knowledge, craftsmanship, and passion that make this sport great don’t get lost as big corporations take over. Under this brand, we’ll continue to sell and build Evolution Sails, provide J/Boats through J/Boats Midwest, and work with other independent companies that share our vision.

We believe in keeping sailmaking independent and keeping sailing strong by focusing on:

  • Education through articles and videos—not just PR fluff, but real insights into sailmaking, sail selection, and performance.
  • Training and developing the next generation of sailmakers—sailmaking is becoming a lost craft in the U.S., and we’re committed to keeping it alive by training and supporting skilled professionals.
  • Building a sailing-focused business, not just a sailmaking company—We’re here to do more than just sell boats and sails. Our goal is to create a company that actively contributes to the sailing community by helping sailors get the most out of their boats, improving access to quality products, and ensuring the sport continues to grow.
  • Providing real expertise—as sailors and sailmakers, we’re here to help sailors at every level, from weekend cruisers to hardcore racers, get the most out of their time on the water.

What’s Changing for You?

Not much! The biggest difference is our new website, 180Sails.com, which will make it easier to learn about sails and stay up to date on the latest sailing insights. We’re still the same team, still making the same high-performance sails under the Evolution Sails banner, and still just as dedicated to helping you get the most out of your time on the water.

For J/Boat owners, J/Boats Midwest is now officially part of 180 Sails.

While we’ll offer our own sails, we’re also happy to collaborate with other lofts if you have a preferred sailmaker. Our goal is simple: to support J/Boat owners—new and long-time sailors alike—with the best service possible.

How Can You Help?

If you believe in what we’re building, we’d love your support. Here’s how you can be a part of it:

  • Share your ideas. What kind of content do you want to see? What topics should we cover? Let us know!
  • Support independent sailmaking. When you buy sails from 180 Sails, you’re helping keep the craft alive in the U.S.
  • Help us grow the sport. Whether it’s through your own sailing, sharing knowledge, or bringing new people into the sport, we believe sailing is better when more people are on the water.

We’re excited about this next chapter, and we hope you’ll join us in growing the sport of sailing, keeping sailmaking independent, and making sailing better for everyone.
