Getting the measurements right is essential to ensuring a perfect fit for your sail—not just in terms of dimensions, but also how the sail attaches to your boat and integrates with your existing setup. We use a variety of methods to achieve precise measurements, and your sailmaker will help determine the best approach—or combination of approaches—to create the ideal sail for you.
On-the-Boat Measurements
Measuring the boat with the rig up is the most accurate way to ensure a perfect fit. We’ve developed a detailed measurement system for each sail type, and our team can walk you through the process. Beyond the primary dimensions—luff, leech, and foot—we also measure attachment points such as tack shackles, reef hooks, and mainsail cars. Taking precise measurements directly from the boat helps guarantee an optimal fit.

Sail Plan
Using a sail plan is common for new boats or when the boat is inaccessible, such as during the offseason or while undergoing repairs. A sail plan allows us to take dimensions and attachment details directly from the designer and build the sail accordingly. However, for older boats, sail plans may be inaccurate or unavailable, making alternative measurement methods necessary.
Sistership Measurements
With experience making sails for hundreds of boats, we have a deep database of designs and measurements. For popular production boats, chances are we’ve already made a sail for that model. In these cases, we can use measurements from a sistership to create your sail. It’s important to verify the exact version of the boat, as some models have multiple configurations that could affect fit.

Measuring an Existing Sail
If the boat or sail plan isn’t accessible, we can use an existing sail that fits correctly as a reference. However, because sails stretch, shrink, and distort over time, we generally recommend sending the sail to our loft for precise measurement. This ensures accuracy and prevents minor errors from being carried over into the new sail.
One Design Sails
For sailors in One Design classes, the process is typically more straightforward. We’ve developed and tested sails for most One Design classes and have the necessary specifications on file. In many cases, the toughest decision will simply be choosing the color of the draft stripes!
Bring in a Professional
If you’re unsure about measuring your own boat, we can send a member of our team or work with an industry partner to take precise measurements for you. This ensures the most accurate fit and takes the guesswork out of the process, giving you confidence that your new sail will perform as expected.

Precision Matters
Every sail we create is custom-designed to fit the needs of the boat and sailor. This includes shaping for the intended use, proper reinforcement, and precise sizing. Our team will work with you to determine the best measurement method—or combination of methods—to ensure your sail fits perfectly straight out of the box.
