Fibercon Polypreg High Aspect – Contender Sailcloth – Racing Cloth

Fibercon Polypreg High Aspect is a premium racing-grade Dacron engineered for boats with tall, narrow sail plans. Manufactured by Contender Sailcloth, this high-performance woven polyester uses a proprietary resin and heat-setting process to produce a stiffer, lower-stretch fabric compared to standard cruising Dacron. The result is a tightly woven, highly stable sailcloth that retains shape well under load, ideal for club racers and one-design fleets seeking consistency and durability without moving to laminates.

Polypreg High Aspect is purpose-built for sails with aspect ratios greater than 2.5:1, where vertical loads dominate and controlling stretch along the leech is critical. Its firm weave and high thread density resist distortion, making it an excellent choice for high-load jibs and mainsails on performance keelboats.

Who Should Use Fibercon Polypreg High Aspect?

This cloth is a smart option for sailors who want better racing performance while staying in the woven polyester category. It’s especially well-suited for:

  • Racers in one-design or PHRF fleets looking for durability and repeatable performance
  • Boats with high-aspect rigs, including many modern keelboats and sportboats
  • Owners who want a stiff, crisp-feeling sail with good shape retention across seasons
  • Sailors who race casually or in mixed-use environments where a laminate may be overkill

It offers a noticeable step up in performance over standard cruising Dacrons, with a firmer hand and reduced stretch for tighter trim and better upwind performance.

Fibercon Polypreg High Aspect’s Limitations

Despite its performance upgrades, Fibercon Polypreg is still a woven polyester and carries some of the same trade-offs. It cannot match the stretch resistance, weight savings, or shape-holding characteristics of membrane or laminate constructions, especially over time and in larger sail plans.

The medium finish that benefits performance can also make it slightly more difficult to flake and handle, particularly as the sail ages and becomes less pliable. And for highly competitive programs or boats over 40 feet, it may not provide the structure needed under peak loads.

For club racers and performance cruisers under 40 feet, though, it strikes an excellent balance of performance, price, and durability.
