Expedition Composite uses the same advanced membrane base as our E-Tech sails—a custom layout of carbon and Technora (aramid) fibers—but adds a woven taffeta skin on one side for improved durability and abrasion resistance. This construction maintains the shape-holding and furling performance of E-Tech while providing extra protection for offshore and high-mileage use. While the added taffeta comes with a slight weight penalty, it pays dividends in longevity, resilience, and reliability—making Expedition Composite the ideal membrane for serious cruisers who expect to sail hard and often.
Who Should Use Expedition Composite
Expedition Composite is best suited for boats over 40 feet planning to log real miles—whether it’s extended passagemaking, offshore rallies, or performance-focused bluewater cruising. It’s an excellent fit for sailors who want membrane-level shape and efficiency, but know their sails will face heavy furling cycles, exposure, or the occasional rough handling. If you’re after a sail that combines structure and endurance, this is the go-to option.
What Are the Limitations of Expedition Composite
The primary tradeoff with Expedition Composite is weight—the added woven taffeta increases durability but also adds bulk and mass, making it slightly less optimized for light-air finesse than our E-Tech membrane. For boats with weight-sensitive rigs or focused on racing-style efficiency, a film-on-film membrane may be more appropriate. But for cruising programs where strength, protection, and lifespan are key, Expedition Composite delivers unmatched value and reliability.
