Dimension-Polyant PXB is a high-stability polyester laminate originally designed for upwind mains and headsails—but when used in lighter weights, it makes for an excellent performance-oriented cruising Code Zero. What sets PXB apart is the addition of a reinforcing fiber laid in the fill (crosswise) direction, which provides excellent shape retention and prevents the sail from distorting when furling under load. This fill fiber works independently from the familiar X-pattern scrim, offering added structure exactly where Code Zeros need it most. The result is a flatter, more stable sail that behaves more like a light-air genoa than a spinnaker—giving cruisers better control, more range, and improved light-air performance.
Who Should Use PXB for a Code Zero?
PXB is a strong fit for boats between 20 and 45 feet looking for a Code Zero that performs more like a headsail than a spinnaker. It’s especially well-suited to sailors who want a higher-performing option than woven or hybrid cloths like Stormlite or CZ Silver, but still want to avoid the cost and stiffness of exotic composites. The lighter-weight PXB laminates we use strike a balance between control and manageability—making them ideal for coastal cruising, club racing, or passagemaking with a performance edge.
What Are the Limitations of PXB?
PXB is a mid-range laminate, offering better shape retention and pointing ability than woven or hybrid fabrics—but it’s still made from polyester, which limits its long-term stretch resistance compared to high-modulus materials like aramid or carbon. For larger boats or more demanding sailing programs, where loads are higher and sail shape must be preserved over many miles, a lower-stretch cloth may be a better long-term fit. But for most mid-sized cruising boats, PXB delivers excellent performance at a more accessible price point.
